When a dog or cat leaves us, we lose a companion who was part of every day. It's natural to want to feel them close a little longer. A memorial portrait is a simple way to keep a personalised keepsake of your dog or cat who has passed away: their gaze, made to order from their photo, on a canvas or a poster that you see every day.

There's no rush: take all the time you need.

Choosing the photo, even if it's old or imperfect

The last photos are sometimes few, old or a little blurry. A few ideas to find the right one:

  • Look everywhere: your phone, an old phone, your computer, your online backups, social media.
  • Ask your family: someone close to you may have a photo you've never seen.
  • For a printed photo, scan it, or photograph it lying flat, in daylight, without reflections.
  • Go for the photo where you can see their eyes, even if it's old: it's their gaze that makes the portrait.

The result depends on the quality of the photo: a very blurry or very dark image will give a less precise portrait. That's why the preview is free. You upload the photo on the product page, you see the result in 20 to 30 seconds, and then you decide. You can try several photos to compare.

Which style for a tribute?

Three styles lend themselves particularly well to remembrance:

  • Realistic: a true-to-life portrait, to see them just as they were.
  • Watercolour: soft tones, a feeling of light and serenity.
  • Charcoal: a charcoal-style black and white, understated and timeless, which goes well with old photos.

The Cartoon (with their name) and Royal Pet (in royal costume) styles are more light-hearted. They can be right for remembering a cheerful or mischievous character. It's a personal choice: there's no wrong way to remember.

Giving a portrait to someone who has lost their pet

A personalised gift for someone whose dog or cat has died can mean a great deal, as long as it's given with sensitivity.

  • Let a little time pass. In the days following the loss, the grief is often too raw. Trust what you know about the person.
  • Find the photo discreetly, from a family member or among those they've shared themselves.
  • Choose an understated style and a modest size, like the 30×40 cm: the person can choose where to put it.
  • Add a simple note about a memory you shared with the animal.
  • If in doubt, talk about it. Choosing the photo together is also a lovely way to give.

Where to hang their portrait?

There are no rules. Some choose the place where their pet liked to be, like the hallway where they used to wait for you; others, a more private room.

  • 30×40 cm (from €54.95): a shelf, a chest of drawers, a small wall.
  • 40×60 cm (from €64.95): above a piece of furniture or a headboard.
  • 60×80 cm (from €99.95): a large wall, above a sofa.

Prefer a poster? From €29.95, in 20×30, 30×40 or 40×60 cm, framed or unframed.

The canvas, with a matte finish, is mounted on a 2 cm wooden frame and delivered ready to hang, with its hanging kit included, which goes up without tools. The colours are guaranteed for life.

Frequently asked questions

I only have an old or blurry photo. Is it possible?

Give it a try. The result depends on the quality of the image, but the free preview shows you the result in 20 to 30 seconds, before you order anything. If you're not happy with the portrait, you pay nothing.

Can you make a memorial portrait of a cat who has passed away?

Yes. A keepsake of a cat who has passed away is created just like one for a dog, from their photo. The portrait also works for other animals, such as a horse or a rabbit.

How does ordering work?

You choose a style, upload the photo on the product page, see the preview, then choose the size. The estimated delivery date is shown under the price, and delivery to the UK is free, with no minimum spend. The details are on the How it works page.

What if the canvas has a defect?

If we make a mistake, we remake the canvas at our expense or refund you. For any question, before or after your order, you can email us at contact@thinkart.store.
